I screw up as a parent all the time. I say the wrong things, say too much, or don't say enough. I set bad examples sometimes, cuss, and let it show that I'm frustrated. Every time that I screw up, I let my kids know it and try to do better the next time. I've never even thought of saying that I'm no good at this so I'm going to quit trying.
So why would you do that with your health?
When you are trying to do anything, especially something new, you're going to make mistakes. That's life. If you're trying to make changes to your fitness or nutrition routine or establish a completely new one, you are going to screw up. You're going to have days that don't go as you planned. You're going to overeat at the birthday party, family gathering, office Christmas party, or just on a random Thursday. You're going to have weeks when you planned on getting to the gym but a kid or family member got sick and you didn't make it. It happens. But what you can't do under any circumstances is quit trying.
When you do that you're making a choice.
One meal or missed workout isn't the end of the world. You are in this for the long haul. Health and wellness is a lifetime pursuit, like all day, every day. Forever. So if you eat a whole bag of sour patch kids, who cares. You've got another meal coming up in a couple hours so you have an opportunity to get back on track. If you didn't get you workout in today and it's time for bed, set the alarm early and go for a walk in the morning. Or if you go to the gym, put the workout on your calendar so it's scheduled for the next day. Try, mess up, try again. Eventually, you'll string together more days in between the slips. Things will get easier, new healthier habits will replace the old ones. No one is perfect and fortunately you're not expected to be.
Just. Don't. Quit.
The only way you screw up is if you quit.
